Understanding Heat Pumps and Their Efficiency in the Built Environment

Within the built environment, heat pumps operate via the vapour compression cycle with a prime mover in the form of an electric motor or gas engine. Unlike traditional electric heating elements that have a performance efficiency of one (i.e., one kilowatt of electricity input produces one kilowatt of heat output), heat pumps boast a significantly higher performance efficiency.

Performance Efficiency of Heat Pumps

The average performance efficiency of a heat pump ranges between two and four. This means that for every kilowatt of compressor effort, two to four kilowatts of heat can be moved from one area to another. This makes heat pumps a highly efficient option for heating purposes compared to traditional electric heating elements.

Air Source Heat Pumps

Air source heat pumps, which are commonly used in many buildings, typically operate with a performance efficiency of 2.5. The challenge lies in extracting heat from very low-temperature sources. For instance, during winter, when temperatures can drop to -4ºC, the efficiency can be somewhat affected.

Ground Source Heat Pumps

Ground source heat pumps, which utilize water from a borehole or a closed loop routed through the earth, offer a more consistent and higher performance efficiency. With a relatively stable heat source of around 16ºC available year-round, these systems can achieve performance figures of approximately 3.2. This makes them an excellent alternative for more stable and higher-efficiency heating solutions.
