Our Commitment to Sustainable Material Selection
At Total, we take great care with our material selection process and continually review what we use and how we use it. This is measured based on their embodied energy, toxicity, environmental impact, scarcity, and technical performance, all while ensuring commercial viability.
Evaluating Pipework Material Choices
As an example of our meticulous approach, we recently assessed the impact of our pipework material choices. We decided on using stainless steel for metallic pipework. Although stainless steel requires more energy to produce per kilogram compared to standard steel, the pipes have a lower overall embodied energy per unit length due to thinner wall thicknesses, making them lighter.
For instance, a 150 mm diameter stainless steel pipe can generate up to 298 megajoules less energy per metre than steel, which is equivalent to 9.17 kg of anthracite coal. Additionally, the corrosion-resistant nature of stainless steel ensures long-term system efficiency and service life.
Plastic Pipework as a Sustainable Alternative
Where possible and technically and aesthetically suitable, we actively promote the use of plastic pipework. Plastic pipes are available in a wide range of types, each with its own characteristics. We select and design carefully to optimize their benefits, which include fast installation, zero scrap value, a corrosion-free life, and long-term system efficiencies.
