Understanding Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR), also known as system 4, represents an advanced fan-based ventilation system. This system encompasses forced supply and extract functionalities alongside heat exchange capabilities. The central MVHR unit, typically comprising an extract fan, supply fan, filters, and a heat exchanger, can be conveniently placed in cupboards, lofts, or behind kitchen hoods.
Components and Installation
MVHR systems use plastic ductwork to channel air to various rooms, generally positioned above ceilings, leaving only aesthetically pleasing grilles visible. Air is extracted from wet areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, toilets, and utility rooms and directed to the MVHR unit. Here, the air undergoes filtration and passes through a heat exchanger, which harnesses the thermal energy to pre-warm incoming outside air before it is expelled to the exterior.
Functionality and Efficiency
The supply air fan draws outside air into the MVHR unit where it is filtered and absorbs heat from the extract air via the heat exchanger. This warmed, filtered air is then supplied to habitable rooms like living rooms and bedrooms, ensuring a fresh and comfortable indoor environment. For optimal efficiency, buildings benefiting from MVHR should be highly airtight, ideally with maximum air leakage rates of 3m³/hr at 50Pa.
